Frequently asked questions.

I’m used to handling things on my own. How would therapy help?

Everyone needs help from now and then. Those who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out.

We help you identify your strengths and show you how to use them to handle or resolve the problems you are facing.

Do you offer both in-person and online therapy sessions?

Yes, we offer both in-person sessions at our location in Hamilton, and online counselling via telehealth and phone appointments across Ontario.

Is my session confidential?

At Statera, your confidentiality is respected at all times. We do not share information with third parties without your informed and written consent, except when required by law. Legal exceptions to confidentiality include:

  • Risk of Harm to Others: If there is an intention to harm another person, we may need to inform that individual or law enforcement to ensure their safety.

  • Risk of Self-Harm: If there is an intention to end one’s life, we may need to contact a trusted person, such as a family member, healthcare provider, or law enforcement.

  • Court Orders: If required by a court order, we must release relevant portions of a client’s file.

  • Child Protection: If there is suspicion of child abuse, neglect, or any other risk to a child, we are required to report this to the Children’s Aid Society.

Supervision and Auditing: For supervision, consultation, or audit purposes, information may be shared with a practice associate or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

In couples or family therapy, topics discussed in sessions where not all members are present may be shared when all individuals resume joint sessions to maintain therapeutic transparency.

Are your services covered by insurance or OHIP?

Our services aren’t covered by OHIP, but many extended health insurance plans do cover psychotherapy or counselling. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for details about your specific coverage. We’re happy to provide receipts for any claims you may need to submit.

How long is a typical therapy session?

Typically, sessions last 50 minutes to an hour. However, the exact duration can be discussed with the therapist during the initial 15 minute consultation.
